Huntington Beach was originally inhabited by the Tongva Indians. They ruled the land for thousands of years, until the European settlers came to the area. The Tongva were an advanced people well versed in hunting, farming, travel and trade. They were the lands tenants for thousands of years, living peacefully in the coastal southern California hills until the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. Mostly missionaries for the first couple hundred years, the Spanish came to conquer the land in 1700s. For about 100 years the land had been used as ranch land for the Spanish and other European settlers. By the 1890's the majority of the area had been settled by small groups of settlers and the area was called Shell Beach. In 1901, Shell Beach was again changed to Pacific City by P.A Stanton and a group of other land buyers. Stanton’s ambition was to erect a town on the Pacific West Coast that could rival Atlantic City on the East Coast of the United States.
Huntington Beach was officially incorporated in 1909 and was named after the Developer with the Huntington Beach Company. Huntington Beach was a sleepy seaside town until the oil boom of the 1920's. It was then known to be the largest oil deposit in California. As oil wells sprang from the soil the town tripled in size.
